CHAPTER THIRTEEN

2523 Pine Arbor Road

Shadow Creek, Washington

Once Joel had safely settled Kathy onto a kitchen chair, with her foot propped up on another chair, he went in search of a restroom. Following the directions she’d given him, Joel found himself gazing interestedly around at the interior layout and décor of Kathy’s home, as he made his way to the bathroom. Every room, corner, and niche he passed or caught a glimpse of, had the stamp of Kathy’s personality imprinted all over it, with the products of her artistry scattered all around her home. He knew she was the artist of these decorations and adornments, because he’d seen her work in Lady Erika’s collection.

Though he only saw a few of the rooms, Kathy’s two-storied house was attractively furnished and decorated in shades of blue, cream, and peach colors. On the main level of her home, through which he was ambling, there was a good-sized kitchen with it’s breakfast nook, and an adjoining family room. There was a sunken living room, with a connecting, formal dining room attached to it, and an art studio with it’s skylights and big bay windows framing the Puget Sound. Both the art studio and her living room had sets of French glass doors leading out onto the covered veranda which encircled the entire house.

A laundry room was neatly tucked in between the garage and family room, while over-sized sliding glass doors in her family room, opened up to a huge patio porch which the verandah connected to. And just a few steps below the porch was a lanai-like enclosure which housed a swimming pool and Jacuzzi.

The bathroom Kathy had directed him to, was one of three on that level of the house, and it was located between the kitchen and art studio. The other two restrooms were strategically situated, one under the stairwell leading to the upper levels of the house, and the other one beside the laundry room. The one beside the washroom, served as a mudroom as well as a bathroom.

The entire house was built on a bluff overlooking the Puget Sound, which created a relaxed and picturesque atmosphere to all the rooms. The whole house was appealingly decorated, and had a welcoming air to it, like it was shouting - “Welcome home…Come, put your feet up, kick back, and relax…” It was a home Joel felt comfortable in, and he could easily picture himself living here, so appealing and soothing it was to his senses.

He easily located the bathroom Kathy had directed him to, and after using it, he strolled back to the kitchen. She was still sitting where he’d left her, on the kitchen chair with her foot propped up on the padded chair facing her.

Neo was sitting on the tiled floor beside her, with his huge snout resting on her lap, snuffling the fur on Elmer, who was contentedly curled up there. The cat’s loud purring could be clearly heard from the doorway, as Kathy absently scratched behind his ears with one hand, while petting the top of the dog’s head with the other.
